How to choose

How to read a listing: what our words mean

Every listing says the same things in the same way, and every word has a precise meaning. This page explains all of them. If after reading it you find a listing unclear, that is our mistake: write to us and we will fix it.

Materials

  • «Steel» — stainless steel, nothing gilt. The material that best takes daily wear: it scratches, but polishes without losing anything.
  • «Gold plate» — a layer of gold a few microns thick over steel. It is not solid gold and we never write it as «gold». It wears at the edges and on the caseback, and cannot be restored: replating erases the original finish.
  • «Steel and gold plate» — what is called two-tone: a steel body with plated bezel, links or inserts.
  • «Gilt» on dials and bezels refers to the colour, not the metal.
  • «Crocodile-stamped» — calf leather printed to imitate crocodile. It was normal even on branded original straps, but it is calf, and we say so.

The condition scale

Four steps, always the same, with the position marked on the scale in every listing.

  • «Never worn» — old stock, with no signs of wear.
  • «Excellent condition» — minimal marks, visible only up close.
  • «Good condition» — wear consistent with age.
  • «Signs of age» — evident marks, described in detail in the listing.
  • Below the step, when there is a specific detail worth flagging, we write it: where the scratches are, which part is worn, whether something is missing from the box. If nothing is written, there is nothing particular to add beyond the step.

Bracelet, bangle, strap

  • «Link bracelet» — shortened by removing links, by any watchmaker. Lengthening is hard: original links are no longer produced.
  • «Rigid bangle» — a closed circle of fixed size. It cannot be tightened or widened. If it is more than a centimetre larger than the wrist it rotates and the dial ends up underneath: which is why it has to be the right size from the start.
  • «Strap» — leather, adjusted by the holes and replaceable. It is a consumable; a signed buckle is not.
  • «Original», said of a bracelet, means the one the watch was born with. If it has been replaced, we say so.

The measurements

  • Case diameter is in millimetres, measured without the crown. When we do not know it for certain, we do not state it.
  • The maximum wrist circumference is measured by hand on the piece, not estimated from a photograph. It is the number that really matters: it says up to which wrist the watch closes.
  • Enter your wrist once and every watch in the catalogue marks itself: «fits you», «borderline», «too small», or «too loose» when it is a rigid bangle that would slip.
  • With «Real size» the case appears on screen at its true dimensions, to compare against a credit card.

Try the real size

What comes with it

  • «Box» — the maison's original box. If it is present but damaged, we say so.
  • «Papers» — warranty booklets, tags, original instructions.
  • «Spare links» — replacement bracelet links, which allow it to be lengthened.
  • «Pouch» — a travel case, almost always not original: where that is so, we say it.
  • The icons at the top of each listing show what is included: the dimmed ones show what is missing.

Price, availability, article number

  • The price includes VAT. Shipping is shown before the order is completed and there are no other costs at checkout.
  • «Sold» means sold: the piece stays visible in the archive because the listing is useful as a reference, but it cannot be bought and the price is no longer shown.
  • «Art.» followed by a code is our internal number for that piece. It is there so you can write to us: with that code we know exactly which watch you mean.
  • Every piece is unique. There are no two identical items in stock: once sold, it is gone.

Quick answers

Are «gold plate» and «gold» the same thing?

No. Gold plate means a thin layer of gold over steel: it is not solid gold. Our listings always write «gold plate» in full, never just «gold».

What does it mean when there is no note below the condition scale?

That there is no specific detail to add beyond the step shown. When there is one — a scratch on the bezel, plating worn at a point, something missing from the box — we write it.

Where does the wrist figure come from?

It is measured by hand on the closed piece, not estimated from photographs. It gives the largest wrist the watch closes on. For rigid bangles the minimum matters too: if the circle is more than a centimetre larger than the wrist, it rotates.

Why are the prices of sold pieces not shown?

Because a past price says little about a different piece: condition, accessories and bracelet vary, and two examples of the same reference can differ by hundreds of euros. The archive stays visible as a reference on models, not on prices.
