In short: a leather strap worn every day lasts between two and four years, and what wears it out is not time but sweat. It is a consumable and should be treated as one — with one important exception: a signed buckle is not a consumable, and the original should be kept even after the leather is finished. In today's selection, 6 pieces are on a strap.

Shoe creams do not belong on watch straps: they contain waxes and solvents meant for thick leather, and on thin leather they stiffen the stitching and stain the side that touches the wrist. If you really want to feed the leather, use a dedicated leather balm — very little, once a year, on the outer side only.
And never submerge it, not even to clean it. Water gets in between the leather and the stitching, and stays there.
Many vintage straps are calf leather printed to imitate crocodile or lizard. That is not a flaw and was normal even on branded originals, but it is a difference in material and should be stated: our listings say «crocodile-stamped» and not «crocodile», because they are two different things. Care is the same as for plain calf.
Replace it when the leather cracks near the lugs, when the holes stretch into ovals, or when the inner side stays damp. It is not a drama: it costs little and takes five minutes.
The part that really matters is the buckle. A signed buckle is worth far more than the strap it sits on, and it is the one piece that cannot be remade: take it off the old strap and fit it to the new one. And keep the original strap anyway, even ruined, together with the box: on the day you resell the watch, «original strap included» is a line that changes the price.
And if the case is gold-plated
Worn every day, between two and four years. Alternated with another watch and taken off before showers and sport, far longer. It is a consumable, and needing replacement is not a flaw.
No. It is made for thick leather: on thin leather it stiffens the stitching and stains the inner side. If anything, use a leather balm — very little, and on the outer side only.
No, provided you keep the original and the signed buckle. The strap is a consumable; the buckle is not. A watch sold with its original strap, even worn, in the box is worth more.
A few drops of rain will not hurt it. Showers, the sea and pools will: the leather swells and then dries stiff. If it does get wet, let it air-dry and never on a radiator.
